UHPC Install Animation
Our UHPLC-ZDV fitting must be installed properly.  Adhereing to the installation instructions will result in a leak free coupling that will withstand 15,000 PSI, and will have no dead volume, and will be immune to tubing creep.  Ignoring the installation instructions will result in leaks, and possibly damage to the fitting.  There are two methods for installation, and either one of them will produce proper leak-free, ZDV operation.    In no case is it ever necessary or desireable to use any tool on this fiting.

Before starting, note that the two knurled areas (for finger tightening) are always used independently.  The large diameter knurl applies pressure to the main ferrule.  The smaller diameter fitting (or 'cap') applies pressure to a secondary ferrule, which is located inside the fitting.

To begin, observe frame '1'.  This shows that before inserting the fitting into the port, you must assure that a very short bit of tubing (approx 1 mm) extends beyond the end of the ferrule.   This is set by adjusting the 'cap' and pulling on the tubing to retract it into the ferrule.  At this time, always examine the ferrule, threads, and tubing end for any contamination or debris.

Step '2' is to insert the fitting into the HPLC port.  In this installation method, full tightening pressure is not applied yet.  Finger tighten only to a state of 'snug' using the knurl on the main body only. Do not use the cap yet.

Step '3' removes all dead volume by driving the tubing completely to the bottom of the port.  Use the cap for this purpose, turning clockwise, then stop when the cap will advance no farther.

Step '4' is to turn the cap back 1/2 turn counter-clockwise.  This is an extremely important step to acheive leak-free seal.

Step '5' is to tighten the main ferrule a final time, this time applying the maximum torque that can be applied with fingers.  This tightening acheives the high pressure seal.

An optional step 6 is to turn the 'cap' clockwise up to 1/2 turn until it stops.   Do not over-tighten the cap.

That is all.  This fitting is not for everyone, we like to think it requires a bit of 'finesse'.   We do guarantee it will produce reliable seals with a positive minimum of dead volume.
